We follow the life of Hirayama who, despite prejudices, sees no problems in his job as a toilet cleaner in Tokyo. A job with a kind of routine, just like his life. It seems to provide the necessary peace in his existence, enjoying the little things. You see the impact of small events and encounters. Without any ready-made answers, we also get a glimpse into his past.

The film's big asset is protagonist Koji Yakusho, but the supporting roles are also quite colorful. And especially the music in the form of cassettes. Perhaps some obvious songs, but actually chosen at the right time. Because of those cassettes and the conscious choice of music, that music plays a role in the film.

Wim Wenders convinces with a slow but heart-warming film that leaves you with a moving feeling. One of the better films of 2023.

What a beautiful Christmas film this is, a gem. Well, you have to sit down for a while and when the third day of Hirayama threatened to unfold in exactly the same way as the previous two, I became a bit restless. But luckily, then it happens.

Don't forget about the sex, violence, tormented relationships and actions that normally make a film entertaining. Of course that doesn't belong in a Christmas movie. It is smaller and finer, and unfolds in a few perfect days.

Without saying much, Hirayama shows us how to live. Humble and humble, humble and gentle, with an eye for the small, delicate and vulnerable, without judging or condemning, not his lazy colleague, not his runaway niece, not his sister who has given herself up to mammon. It is all love that this man radiates. Alone, but not at all lonely, he drives his small car against traffic jams, showing us the right way.

Too bad that at the end God comes to tell him that he is going to die. And that we just have to do it ourselves. To love, to care for. Now.

Because next time? That's for next time.

Hirayama [Kôji Yakusho] works as a public toilet cleaner in Tokyo. He does his job excellently and in the meantime enjoys his two great passions: listening to rock music from the 60s and 70s and viewing and photographing trees. During his work he avoids contact, even with his much younger colleague Takashi [Tokyo Emoto]. In the restaurant of singer Mama [Sayuri Ishikawa], he talks to contemporaries about the good old days. This protected routine is disrupted by two women. The introduction to Takashi's silent girlfriend Aya [Aoi Yamada], who is fascinated by Hirayama's music (and the accompanying cassette tapes), and the arrival of his niece Niko [Arisa Nakano]. Meditative, optimistic drama earned Yakusho a Golden Palm for Best Actor, but that is mainly the merit of Wim Wenders, who, with the help of Franz Lustig's beautiful camera work and Toni Froschhammer's editing, shows what Hirayama thinks and feels. The second half is excellent and the final scene is beautiful, it's a shame that the first hour is so very long-winded.
