With this film, Alain Ughetto tells the story of how his Italian ancestors ended up in France: his grandfather was already a labor migrant, who worked on the tunnel between Italy and Switzerland, among other things, and when fascism rose, he settled permanently in France. Besides this piece of family history full of abject poverty, including some European history such as fascism and WWII, the film doesn't offer that much: there isn't really a dramatic tension or anything. Possibly the film wants to use this family album to refer to and generate sympathy for the contemporary migrants who flee from Africa and Asia to Europe because of poverty or oppression. What makes the film a bit special is Alain Ughetto's tinkering for this stop-motion film: that is well done. Alain also wants to indicate that he also likes to work with his hands, with the film occasionally showing his hands to his papier-mache ancestors.

The French Alain Ughetto tells the life story of his Italian grandparents Luigi [Stefano Paganini] and Cesira [Ariana Ascaride] using stop motion. That history begins in the village of Ughettera in Italy at the end of the 19th century and continues until the end of the Second World War, when the family emigrated to France. The title refers to the exclusion of Italians as a result of their role in the war. It's an unremarkable story and that might explain why Ughetto peppers the narration with funny intended, but rather lame visual gags. Quite nice and occasionally touching, but those who have a little historical knowledge will certainly not be shocked by this.

Those stop motion films are often a feast for the eyes. It is unbelievable how much working time often creeps up to make such productions. It's nice to be able to get creative with ideas sometimes. The broccoli's that had to pass as trees is one of those. But the author's intervention - the big hand that literally lends a hand - is also a nice addition. We saw the latter, for example, at Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (Film, 2021)

In terms of content, I thought it was just so-and-so. Not great already. A little too little spice or power to really catch on or be memorable. We see the life of a weekday Italian mountain family that wants to look for better places. To say that migrants were not welcomed everywhere with open arms is an understatement today. A lot of misery (some deaths) and a lot of rooting, worrying and making hard calculated choices leads the family to France. With WWII and the rise of il Duce looming, things don't get any easier for the family.

Very nice to have seen, but just expected a little more.
