Beautifully portrayed by cameraman Roger Deakins, but unfortunately there are a few things to criticize about this well-intentioned but sometimes rather naive film. Plot and characters are very caricatural and are worked out in an obvious way, with so many themes passing by that it is a wonder that the film manages to maintain a certain calmness. The beautiful subdued score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross definitely contributes to that.

It's December 1980 and Hilary [Olivia Colman] works as a manager at Empire Cinema in Margate where her affair with her married boss Donald Ellis [Colin Firth] is an open secret. The arrival of Stephen [Michael Ward], an ambitious young man with a Caribbean background, results in a new friendship that is put under strain after Hilary fails several times when Stephen becomes a victim of racism. Mendes' takes on too much hay and fails to interweave all the themes in a coherent and effective manner. That is also noticeable in the somewhat searching game of Colman in particular. As always, Roger Deakins' cinematography is of an exceptionally high standard.

Although best known for her television work, Olivia Colman has been making headway in recent years with eye-catching performances in important cinema films. That also applies to this psychodrama, which starts sweet and warm, but gradually undergoes a thorough change of atmosphere. An excellent film with an unmistakable message.
