A well-known author delves into the world of less well-paid jobs and wants to show with her book what the working and living conditions are like for that specific group of employees - or the unemployed.

It often happens that journalists in real life go for that approach, and thus bring out an often harsh and sad world that many people do not think about, or even have little awareness of.

Ouistreham thus plays on two levels: the film tells the story of the writer; but immediately takes over the role of the leading lady, another excellent Juliette Binoche.

The viewer is confronted with the hard work and time pressure of the cleaning crews on ferry boats: with the toilets left behind filthy; change the sheets of 120 beds within 90 minutes; with the women who often still have to perform the dirtiest tasks.

Yet it does not come across as a documentary at all. The director has found the golden mean between a (slightly romantic) drama and a film that makes the audience think while watching, and hopefully afterwards.

Funny, or rather cynical, that the vast majority of moviegoers are people who are financially stronger than the characters in the film; while one of the cleaning ladies puts her situation into perspective and considers herself lucky that she was not born in, say, Uganda. NB: port and ferries: the transmigrants are also present in the background.

I heard there are several amateurs in the cast. It cannot be seen.

Ouistreham excels in its combination of theme, qualities, and simplicity.

3.5*.

Marianne Winckler [Juliette Binoche] returns to the labor market after more than 20 years, looking for a job in cleaning. After some wandering between employers, she gets a job on the Ouistreham ferry. It is hard work, but Marianne also experiences the solidarity between colleagues and builds up a friendship with a few colleagues. But Marianne is hiding a secret whose revelation could end the friendships she has made. Binoche skillfully self-effaces in favor of the supporting cast, and Carrère reinforces authenticity with a fly-on-the-wall approach. Excellently made and captivating, but dramatically a bit on the flat side. Based on an essay by Florence Aubenas.

Juliette Binoche as a toilet cleaner. That was still missing in her versatile film career. Once again she succeeds in portraying her role convincingly. This film gives a very nice account of the worries, insecurities and collegiality of people at the bottom of the labor market, right down to... the rather forced plot twist. I had a kinder ending in mind.
