Les Noces Rouges (1973)

A quintessential, classic, mediocre Chabrol film.

A story that you find difficult to accept at times, a mysterious, somewhat sultry, mischievous, and slightly corrupt atmosphere, subtle criticism of social classes, and actors who sometimes come across as a bit awkward. Stéphane Audran and Michel Piccoli certainly indulge in overacting at times, but that is perhaps not unintentional, as he (Chabrol) also enjoys stirring up strong emotions and subsequently dissecting characters coolly and coldly.

It was an enjoyable watch, although the ravages of time have certainly taken their toll. Stéphane Audran and Michel Piccoli are at their best here, even though the acting style is no longer of this era. Of course, that is to be expected. I found the exaggerated passion and the kissing annoying—I mean, unbelievable. The ending of the story is a bit weak. We don't really care much for Claude Chabrol's socially critical views anymore. I recall they didn't even back then. But what is fantastic are the cars: two sweet DSs, Piccoli's from the first series with the 'normal' headlights, and also a nice Simca and a beautiful Peugeot 404. That was a real treat.

Particularly beautifully shot in the French countryside and supported by a fine score and excellent pacing. I am less enthusiastic about the storyline and the acting.
