The Mummy plot

"It Comes to Life!"

In 1921, an expedition in Egypt discovers the mummy of the ancient Egyptian prince Imhotep, who was damned and buried alive. The tomb also contains the so-called Scroll of Toth, which can bring the dead back to life. One evening, a member of the expedition reads out the text on the Scroll, who then goes mad, realizing that he has brought Imhotep back to life. Ten years later, the mummy dressed as a modern Egyptian tries to find his old lover, who has been reincarnated as a beautiful young woman.

Atmospheric horror classic from the old box, and unlike many of its contemporaries, still quite (a bit) exciting. The first part in particular is very atmospheric and Karloff is impressive as a mummy, even though director Karl Freund barely shows him. He was (rightly) of the opinion that the suggestion was a lot more exciting than showing the sample itself.

But when Karloff is in the picture, Jack Pierce's gorgeous makeup still stands out. Not just the mummy makeup, by the way. Karloff also looks like Ardath Bey as fragile papyrus.

The plot may resemble Dracula a bit (some scenes with Van Sloan are almost the same on a dialogue level), but unlike Tod Browning's stiff framing, Freund makes it all a lot more cinematic and dynamic. And therefore much more exciting. In any case, he does a number of (for that time) very complex camera movements up his sleeve.

The Mummy remains one of my favorites from this period. Funny detail: just like Dracula and Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Mummy begins with an excerpt from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.

Increased to 5 stars.

Hadn't actually seen any of the old Universal monster movies on Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, I discovered. So it's high time for The Mummy. A nice film, but despite the short running time, the film often drags. Every time the charismatic Boris Karloff appears on the screen it is delicious, but otherwise the film is sometimes quite tough. That our main character Helen, for example, has more feelings for that huge boring bastard Frank than for Karloff is incomprehensible and perhaps the most unrealistic element of this film.

3 stars.

Pretty tame and super slow story about Imhotep, a buried alive Egyptian prince, who comes back to life and somehow wants to be reunited with his wife. The only thing that impressed me was that face of Boris Karloff with skin that looks like parchment.

2.5*
