Das Schweigende Klassenzimmer plot

"East Germany, 1956. One minute of silence changed their lives forever."

The DDR, 1956. The adventurous Theo and Kurt went to West Berlin and saw on the news that a bloody popular uprising had been crushed in Budapest. Back in East Germany, together with their fellow students Lena, Paul and Erik, they come up with the idea of having a minute of silence during class to show their solidarity with the victims. After the action, the Stasi accuses the students of a counter-revolution and uses every means to drive a wedge between the classmates in the hope of discovering the identity of the instigator.

When the Hungarians revolted against Soviet rule in October 1956, I was in the first year of high school. As a young teenager, I tried to imagine the events there by watching the radio news (we didn't have television yet) and by seriously reading the newspaper every day for the first time. A few months later, a new boy joined my class: a Hungarian refugee named Arpad (I've forgotten his last name).

With only those limited memories, I was incredibly curious about this film about how East German schoolchildren—who were literally much closer to the action—reacted to the Hungarian revolt at the time. I have to say: I watched it with bated breath. The film is probably a bit over-the-top for dramatic effect, but despite that, it's a fascinating psychological drama about solidarity, camaraderie, uncertainty, political oppression, and their impact on social life and family life. A fantastic film!

To my knowledge, not many films have been made about the 1956 Hungarian Uprising. The only one I can remember is Szabadság, Szerelem (2006). Also very worthwhile. I'd appreciate any recommendations.

An excellent film in which a graduating class observes two minutes of silence in solidarity with the Budapest uprising. This rather politically charged film is set in a divided post-war Germany (even within the family there are divisions). Some of the events that follow are somewhat forced, but it does result in an interesting film that once again demonstrates the great value of freedom of speech.

Presented subdued with the palpable tension of the GDR regime in the 1950s, the film revolves around the perseverance of a group, demonstrating once again that this is a challenging task for everyone. Their perseverance, despite the psychological pressure imposed upon them, is a fine piece of acting. Scheicher, Gramenz, and Dassler excel. The film also clearly demonstrates how Nazism seamlessly transitioned into an equally depraved Stalinist system, where oppression is at its core. Fear repeatedly proves to be a powerful tool for forcing people to comply. Lukas, as Schwarz, is practically both an ex-Nazi and a Stalinist when he acts out in class. His hairstyle is perfectly chosen for the film. The fact that this is a true story makes the film even more compelling, with the psychological question...what would you do in such a situation?
