A decent thriller/horror film that could have been executed better.
I agree with joolstein, who argues that more could have been done with the data. Unfortunately, we often see directors fail to develop a story beautifully and create a great film.
Now, it's not that this film disappointed us overall, no, thankfully not. We enjoyed this story reasonably well. The acting was okay, especially from Seána Kerslake, who plays mother Sarah. Unlike "Joolstein," we didn't find her son Chris bordering on annoying. The kid does a great job and especially when he gets mean with the little rascal inside him, we thought he was a real acting talent.
And then back to the film's story unfolding: "You see the little boy in the choir, and at the end of this scene, only he's left on stage, and Mom wakes up. Where are the rest of the kids? And how does Chris get home without his mom? Walking?
One to see, we rate the film a 7-.

A very nice film, indeed. The first half seems to follow the familiar pattern of the "evil kids" genre. I was also a bit worried we'd get another nonsense about a demon-possessed child, but thankfully Cronin gives it a more unusual twist, and the how and why are thankfully left ambiguous. There's also a rather unsettling atmosphere, thanks in part to the strong performances of Mother and Son. The sense of paranoia is also conveyed quite effectively through a host of small, subtle details, allowing the film to really get under your skin after a while and stay there until the very end.

Not a masterpiece or anything, because it's not all that original, just a well-crafted genre film with some quirky twists here and there. A close 3.5*

Strong.

Exceptional authorship or a feat of unseen originality? No, not really. The Hole in the Ground is a typical genre work, where the plot is secondary to its execution. Fortunately, it's very successful, so as a horror fan, you have nothing to complain about.

There are so many average (and even completely crappy) movies that easily score in the 3.25-3.50 range on MM, it's incomprehensible to see a film like this rated for less than 3.00, because The Hole in the Ground is truly an above-average horror. It might not be suitable for everyone, but the quality is hard to miss.

Visually dark but tight. If it's too dark, you'll need to buy a better TV or close the curtains; everything is very easy to follow. Beautiful camerawork, strong shots, and a solid use of dark colors. The acting is also more than decent for a horror film, and the soundtrack is even better. Atmospheric and suspenseful.

The plot combines some classic horror elements (like creature flicks) with a psychological angle. Cronin manages to prolong the suspense, which only enhances the tension. The final 10 minutes wrap everything up nicely, with a classic "but what if" to give the ending some sense of openness.

This film won't blow you away, but pure genre films never do, of course. But the quality of this film is far above average horror, and it's a shame that's hardly appreciated here.

3.5*
