In itself a nice film because it probably shows the state of mind of the soldiers and especially the officers very well. Journey's End is a film that takes a slightly different approach than many other war films. It certainly succeeded in providing a good sketch of the situation. Despite this, the film does not immediately convince because of the too well-known cast. Unfamiliar names might have brought this up better because you've seen some of the cast in other roles too many times. To be honest, I didn't think Asa Butterfield was very suitable as an officer, but she's a strange wingman and that suited his role. Interesting to have seen but otherwise not too special.

A film that shows how miserable it was to be a soldier in the first world war. Cruel, impersonal and life-threatening, although I suspect that little has changed, except that the material is more modern and the number of people matters less. If you consider that in about 3 months fighting in this small part of France, around 700,000 soldiers are killed and about 1,000,000 men are killed during recapture, you get an impression of how many men were needed to wage a war! The story is set in the trenches near Saint-Quentin (Aisne) in northern France. New is a lieutenant of about 19 years old, Jimmy Raleigh, played by Asa Butterfield. He still thinks it is a great honor to be on the battlefield and is eager to take on the German opponent. Also present is his friend, Captain Stanhope, who has changed a lot as a person because of all the violence he has endured thus far.

Personally, I thought the film had a good story, remained quite realistic and had good actors and decor.

Rating: an 8!

Another tip:

Sam Claflin who plays Captain Stanhope, found out during family research that his great-great-grandfather fought during the First World War at the same place during the last battle mentioned at the end of the film and in which the above numbers of soldiers are came to life. (1,700,000)

Doesn't really add anything to the existing collection of WWI films, despite the excellent cast. It also lacks some urgency.
