Lerd plot

"A film of immense courage and defiance"

Reza, 35, lives a simple life with his wife and son in a remote village in northern Iran. He was previously expelled from a college for protests against the bad food for factory workers and vowed never to be oppressed again. He now spends his days in his goldfish farm. Unfortunately, a neighboring private company, with close ties to the local authorities, manages almost all aspects of the village and the shareholders are forcing the local farmers and small owners to transfer their property in favor of the company. The company also has its eye on Reza's nursery.

Over the past few years, I've seen more than twenty Iranian films. What they almost all have in common is excellent acting. This drama, about a man whose integrity is severely tested in an environment where corruption and intimidation are rampant, is no exception.

Besides the thrilling drama with its undisguised criticism of Iranian society, it's once again a true pleasure to watch Reza Akhlaghirad in the title role. The same goes for Soudabeh Beizaee as his wife. A beautiful film from the fearless director Mohammad Rasoulof, which makes me curious about his other works.

I'm also approaching 20, and I agree with Barbie: consistently excellent acting. Always high-quality, well-researched films, especially those that resonate with an international audience. This Lerd is no exception, with its "eat or be eaten" theme.

Being good and having certain principles won't get you far. Reza learns this when he tries to keep his fishing business afloat, but is also overly dependent on the goodwill of influential third parties and local authorities. Corruption and cronyism are not far off.

Strong character development for the main character, but also for his wife, for example. Praise also to Rasoulof, who manages to convey a clear message with this.

Another excellent Iranian film from his country's most rabid opponent of the regime. This time, he shows how corruption has ravaged all levels of society. To survive in that society, you have no choice but to participate in the system. Reza is a naturally honest man with many problems—so many that he's gradually going mad, and so many that his family is on the verge of collapse.

The film has a long buildup in which the extent of Reza's problems gradually becomes clear, as do the power dynamics within the local community. He's gradually backed into a corner, leaving him with no other option than to retaliate, both for his own credibility and the safety of his family. With such a theme, I expected a bitter ending. I agree with others who say that some scenes are somewhat convoluted and unclear.
