"Basic switch. Killer new look."
When the mystical ancient dagger of the ruthless serial killer "The Butcher" causes him and Millie to wake up in each other's bodies, Millie discovers she has only 24 hours to avoid being permanently trapped in the body of a murderous psychopath. The biggest obstacle is that she has the appearance of a middle-aged maniac, who is the target of a manhunt across the city. The Perks of Being a Serial Killer
Freaky is off to a strong start, being a straight forward slasher with some creative kills. This is until the plot picks up and the humor plays an increasingly important role. The horror element then disappears more into the background, and only comes out very strongly at times. The focus is on the gore at these moments, so if that's your thing then you're in the right place here.
Just take it into account that Freaky is not scary or exciting in any way and, by far the biggest flaw, is usually not funny at all. And this is putting it mildly. The kiss scene, where a young dude kisses the swapped serial killer because his crush is hidden in this body, feels very out of place and unbelievable and is not funny at all. Easily one of the low points of the film. And while Vince Vaugh initially made me curious, he turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments.
The casting wasn't great anyway as the entire cast felt interchangeable. Kathryn Newton does it best, but this is especially so once the switch has taken place. Her display as a wallflower is much too exaggerated and completely misses the mark. Finally, the story has a very predictable course and is full of clichés that are also poorly executed. What remains are some nice kills, but here you might as well fast forward to the rest, and then fast forward to the rest. A bit of a shame that this is not possible in the cinema..

Originally the film was called Freaky Friday the 13th, it is also clearly a reference to Freaky Friday and Friday the 13th. Lately there have been more of these kind of horror comedies that actually work. Better humor than the silly humor of the Scary Movie variants. The balance between humor and teen horror is much more balanced. Cinematically, this is of course not that special, but I really enjoy the whole movie. And humor is a difficult genre anyway. I hope to see more of this. Really enjoy.
