“You have the most unusual names here. Chechomony, Kuyukanhoic, Pocahontas.”

“You have a most unusual name too. John Smith.”

Solid animation film about Pocahontas. I do have the feeling that there could have been more in it, because the focus is very much on the uninteresting love story between Pocahontas and John Smith. That while the battle between the English and the Indians is more interesting, but that storyline comes off poorly. The music isn't too special either, with the exception of the catchy 'Colors of the Wind'. By the way, this is a movie that I would like to see a live-action movie made of.

Captain Smith and Pocahontas had a very mad affair. When her daddy tried to kill him she said: 'Daddy oh don't you dare, he gives me fever...'

It doesn't want to be as sensual and exotic as in Peggy Lee's 1958 hit Fever in Disney's 33rd animated film. By the way, it would have been groundbreaking: an erotic scene with Pocohantos and Captain Smith (voice Mel Gibson!).

Pocahontas is definitely not one of my favorite Disney cartoons. After the epic The Lion King, expectations were high, but Disney did not live up to them. I'm not so devastated by the way of drawing and although they have won awards, the songs sound way too sweet to my ears. I had it set to Dutch and then a white voice like that of Pia Douwes sounds very out of place. The raccoon is very cute.

Incidentally, Pocahontas is the first Disney film in which two people from different ethnic backgrounds fall in love with each other.

Lesser Disney. The story is way too heavy, mature, boring and serious for a fun Disney animation. The funny animals that have been added to it as compensation can do little to change that. This would have worked better as an adult romantic live-action drama rather than animation. In terms of songs, only Colors Of The Wind stands out, the rest are also less. Technically it is very solid, which does not mean that it is also very beautiful, but the way the story is presented (serious and mature) it clashes terribly with the expectations one has of a Disney animation. And despite its brevity, it felt long-winded. 2*
