Nice film in which five short horror stories pass by. The five separate stories are connected in an entertaining way via a head/tail method (especially fun when it turns out that the last segment connects to the first). Nicely gloomy in tone, but not equally entertaining everywhere. The second and third segments stand out. Easily 3.0 stars.

Beautifully constructed horror film in which five storylines are cleverly connected. The stories all take place near a gas station on a highway that is - as one of the main characters says - "in the middle of nowhere". The fact that the stories flow seamlessly into each other means that the ending of each storyline is never predictable. The SF elements during the opening of the film are not entirely convincing, but that first story immediately manages to create an ominous atmosphere that continues to dominate throughout the film. My favorite is 'The Emergency', in which a motorist who follows the instructions of a 911 employee after a collision in order to save the life of the seriously injured victim, but the other storylines are also very entertaining.

Southbound is an anthology film that tells a number of macabre stories about travelers who are confronted with dark events on a deserted road in the American Mojave Desert.

The segments are filled with supernatural phenomena, all sorts of unsavory actions, lots of blood, craft effects and lots of black humor. The term horror is not an exaggeration. The stories are very varied and a mixture of subgenres. Mystery, occultism, slashing, home invasion and more are all featured. Of course, the film also contains elements of the genre 'road movie'.

The segments are short, focus on the essential action and have a surprising twist at the end. A black comedy underlayer is not lacking. The episode entitled The Accident even has a comic overlayer. In this story, a victim of a car accident is taken care of by the perpetrator in a gruesome and hilarious way. With good intentions, but the amount of gore and blood that results speaks volumes. Black comedy of the highest level. Also the best episode, as far as I'm concerned.

Despite the different directorial styles and the variety of subgenres, the stories form a whole. The segments flow seamlessly into each other and are interconnected. All characters share a destiny. Themes such as guilt and revenge are central.

The exceptionally well-depicted melancholic and desolate setting of the desert gives the film a fantastically gloomy atmosphere. Within that, sharply edited films full of variety and pace. The film offers 90 minutes of devilish entertainment, is gripping and above all very nice.
