From the Dark plot

"Pray for dawn."

A young couple, Mark and Sarah, are driving through Ireland on a number of back roads and have car trouble. They are in an area out of range of their cell phone and have no contact except with one neighbor who lives in a farm. Night falls and they arrive at the farm where they meet the owner. They determine that he has dug up something that prefers darkness to light.

Decent horror movie.

Don't expect anything too special. A couple, a deserted road, car trouble, and a small house. It's clear they won't have an easy time continuing their journey, but the interesting thing is that the "darkness" never really gets a clear face.

While there are indeed some Nosferatu references, this certainly isn't a straight-forward vampire film. That makes it all the more enjoyable, because you can discover the monster itself more during the film itself.

The cinematography is decent, though it's occasionally a bit too dark. The acting is also quite good, though it won't win any awards. The setting also helps a bit; the rugged Irish landscape always adds a little something extra to a film like this.

Best not to have high expectations, but not bad as a horror snack.

Narrow 3.0*

Two travelers are stranded at a dilapidated house and confronted by an evil entity. The story is easy to summarize. The film thrives on a dark atmosphere. Terrifying things happen in the darkness. At times, the images are so dark that you can't see anything. Literally. Too dark, for my taste, and a bit of an annoyance.

After an atmospherically stifling first half, which (aside from the minor annoyance) is enjoyable, the film takes a turn for the worse in the second half when the tension completely disappears. The protagonists have found the weapon with which they can fight the evil creature. Similar scenes repeat one another. The lack of story and investment in the characters is what weighs the film down.

The horror clichés pile up. Director Conor McMahon employs familiar tricks to keep the characters in the terrifying place and in the grip of evil. The interplay of light and dark works well enough, but it becomes very drawn out. The effect is weakened by the depiction of scary incidents and effects according to the same invariable principle. The lack of a fresh angle or simply more substance to the story then takes its toll. There's nothing but the darkness to fall back on.

Hold The Dark has nice atmospheric beginnings but subsequently offers too little narrative substance to captivate across the board.
