Helix plot

A group of scientists at the Centers for Disease Control are investigating a possible outbreak of a virus. It soon becomes apparent that they must save the world from a catastrophic disaster. Teleurstellende serie van Syfy, waar ik al vroeg in het seizoen mee ben gestopt. Had al geen topserie verwacht uiteraard, maar leuk B vermaak had ik stiekem toch wel op gehoopt. Helaas weet het bijna geen enkel moment te boeien. Allereerst grote minpunten voor de casting. Billy Campbell, Alan, heeft op het eerste gezicht al een irritant hoofd. Zijn gezicht maken de verwachtingen waar, want Alan is ook gewoon een bloedirritant mannetje. Totaal geen charisma ook. Waarom zo'n figuur je main character maken...? Wat rest?.... Een militair die, buiten dat hij net een iets te hoog 'gay gehalte' heeft, ook nog eens matig acteert. En misschien nog wel de grootste ergenis: de iets te dikke 'monkey-vrouw', die op een grove manier grappig moet zijn, maar dat totaal niet is. De hele cast is eigenlijk een ergernis. Wat heeft de serie verder te bieden? De pilot vond ik op zich best nog wel sterk. De geïsoleerde sfeer (doet een beetje denken aan The Thing) is tof, en de special effects zien er over het algemeen best aardig uit (met uitzondering van het 'rattengevecht', waar ik dan nog wel om kan lachen). Helaas boeit het verhaal gewoon totaal niet. Lekker incapabel zooitje ook... Er loopt een levensgevaarlijke geïnfecteerde vent rond in een gebouw wat je met geen mogelijkheid kan verlaten. Hoe moeilijk is het dan de vent op te sporen zou je zeggen???. Verhaal is verder niet vooruit te branden en van enige spanning of mysterie is eigenlijk geen sprake. Maar zelfs al zou dat wel het geval zijn: de characters zijn zo onsympathiek dat het me eigenlijk ook niet zou interesseren wat er met hun gebeurd. Klinkt allemaal wel heel negatief nu, en dat ben ik voor het grootste gedeelte ook. Echt saai is het echter niet. Het kijkt allemaal wel redelijk weg. Maar om hier nou 2 seizoenen voor m'n plezier van te gaan kijken: nee....

Disappointing series from Syfy, which I stopped early in the season. Didn't expect a top series of course, but I had secretly hoped for fun B entertainment. Unfortunately, it hardly manages to captivate for a single moment.

First of all, big negatives for the casting. Billy Campbell, Alan, has an annoying head at first glance. His face lives up to expectations, because Alan is also just a bloody annoying little man. No charisma at all. Why make such a figure your main character...? What's left?... A soldier who, in addition to having a slightly too high 'gay content', also acts moderately. And perhaps the biggest annoyance: the slightly overweight 'monkey woman', who is supposed to be funny in a gross way, but is not at all. The whole cast is actually an annoyance.

What else does the series have to offer? I thought the pilot itself was pretty good. The isolated atmosphere (reminiscent of The Thing) is nice, and the special effects generally look pretty nice (with the exception of the 'rat fight', which still makes me laugh). Unfortunately, the story just doesn't catch on at all. Nice and incompetent mess too... There's a life-threatening infected guy walking around in a building that you can't possibly leave. How hard is it to track down the guy you might say???. The story cannot be burned forward and there is actually no question of any tension or mystery. But even if that were the case, the characters are so unsympathetic that I wouldn't really care what happened to them.

It all sounds very negative right now, and for the most part I am. However, it is not really boring. It all looks pretty good. But to watch 2 seasons for my pleasure: no....
