Water, Earth, Fire and Air. In the world of Avatar, the world is divided into 4 nations: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation and the Air Nomads. Some people can control and manipulate their own element, this is also known as Steering. Only the Avatar can control all 4 elements. Because of this, it is the Avatar's job to keep the balance in the world. When the Avatar dies, it is reborn in the next Nation of the cycle, so the Avatar never belongs to one nation.
