George Washington "Wash" Black is an 11-year-old boy fleeing a life of slavery on a sugar plantation in Barbados. The sociable, high-spirited Medwin Harris, who traveled the world after a traumatic childhood as a black refugee in Nova Scotia, is the de facto mayor of Black Halifax, putting the community above all else—except for Washington Black, his young protégé. Meeting Wash sets him on a challenging path of self-discovery. As he begins to gain more sympathy, Medwin also begins to dream again.
