The Affair plot

The Affair explores the emotional effects of an extramarital relationship. Noah is a school teacher and writer in New York City who is happily married but turns away from dependence on his wealthy father-in-law. Alison is a young waitress trying to pick up her life and marriage after a tragedy. Set in Montauk on the fringes of Long Island, the provocative drama unfolds from both the male and female perspectives, using the selective memories of both to tell the story. Detective Jeffries interrogates the two about what happened that summer to solve his murder case.

The final season of a series that got off to an impressive start but lost its way after the second season. Rock-solid episodes alternated with strange choices that you admire at times, but unfortunately, the mark was also missed significantly at times.

Unfortunately, this 5th season is no exception. After a weak start featuring storylines that contribute little to the whole but are included for idealistic reasons, it gradually improves as the focus shifts more to the essential characters of the series.

The storylines eventually come together beautifully, but this requires the use of various contrived devices that don't always work well and detract somewhat from the whole. What once began as a tasteful and subtle series degenerates just a little too much into an explanatory and rather preachy narrative that, on balance, is slightly better than season 4.

The ending is quite beautiful, but in all honesty, quite a few characters from the first two seasons are missed, and the series could easily have stopped after season 2.

Overall, we really enjoyed this series and it is still highly recommended.
