Extremely disappointing season, with a dip in quality where I am almost immediately finished with the series. For some reason, the writers thought it would be a good idea to put Noah and Alison together on screen as little as possible. Daring, but a huge mistake as far as I'm concerned; their chemistry together is what made the series for me. In addition, a strange role for Fraser that appears on the scene as an obsessive prison guard; with a storyline that 1) makes no sense and 2) goes nowhere. Too bad everyone, showrunner Treem wants the series to stay 'fresh' and not to be repeated so badly that she doesn't really take the parties involved into account, IMO.

The third season of The Affair turns out to be quite a bit darker and heavier than the first two seasons. Whereas the first two seasons constantly struck a fine balance between suspense, sex, humor, and a pleasant holiday vibe, the tone is slightly less lighthearted, and the opening episode and Noah's storyline, in particular, hit very hard.
Furthermore, the difference in perspectives of each character and the angle—that every narrator is unreliable—is taken a little further. Unfortunately, this does not work out equally well everywhere, but there is certainly enough material to discuss.
A major plus remains that the acting level stays exceptionally high and that, thanks to the build-up of the first two seasons, you have enough connection with the characters to take a slightly different approach in this third season. It is a bold choice and deserves praise, but in all honesty, I hope that season 4 will be a bit lighter again and easier to watch.
The quality of this series remains very high, and the characters in particular are well-written, and as a viewer you simply want to know how it all ends, so we are smoothly moving on to season 4.
