Mixed feelings.

The series starts very promising. Six Feet Under is often compared to The American Beauty, and that comparison is very justified. Six Feet Under has the same slightly ironic tone, in which a mirror is held for society through black humor and surrealism. And the characters are likeable: different enough to pique my interest, but normal enough to put me in their shoes. The funeral setting is also strong: it offers the opportunity to explore big questions surrounding the theme of death, and it makes for fascinating situations and emotional moments.

But like many other series, Six Feet Under, in my opinion, goes on for too long, and always wants to outdo itself - not in the sense that it has to be "better", but that everything has to be "bigger": more dramatic, more sentimental, more extreme. . I was already bothered by this in the first season, but in later seasons it only gets worse - contrary to reports I read that the series is getting better. From a fascinating series with sympathetic characters, it increasingly turns into a soap opera in which one drama follows another and you have to look for somewhat stable characters and relationships with a magnifying glass.

I have yet to see the final season (and I skipped a lot from seasons 3 and 4), but so far I have mixed feelings about the series. The atmosphere and setting are strong, the characters are well portrayed and the series has very nice moments. But also an excess of drama and sentiment.

Two meters into the ground: this first year is a nice seat, but with this score I expected just a little more.

The first three or four episodes are strong: innovative and original, funny, compelling.
After that, I'm left with mixed feelings: the separate plots of all episodes - with which each episode also starts - remain fun and are well developed.
On the other hand, the side stories that continue throughout the season...
David's homosexuality, and the theme outing, is not that bad.
Ruth who can't choose between her two lovers, and Claire who doesn't know where she stands with Gale: is already a lot less.
All the stuff about Brenda's brother Billy: way too long drawn out, downright boring.

Add to that an open ending to some of those side plots: what about Bruce being in an institution; what about Gale committing a robbery...?

The four main actors are superb, and have a big part in keeping this series above average. I once saw Lauren Ambrose in Swimming (2000) - MovieMeter.nl: also a film that is completely carried by her. Too bad she's already married...

Finally started this series.

Although the series seemed a bit dowdy and dated to me in the beginning, I gradually got sucked into it and now I understand the mostly rave reviews. As far as I'm concerned, the strength lies in the nuances of the characters and the daily worries that are sometimes very recognizable. Don't expect any action or spectacle. It is a series in which you mainly see the life of a particularly endearing family.
