Pluribus takes place in a world struck by a strange phenomenon: a "happiness epidemic" rapidly spreading across the globe. People suddenly become cheerful, relaxed, and content, a state that seems too good to be true. Vreselijk! Hoe dit een 9 krijgt op iMDB is mij een raadsel, dat zijn volgens mij enkel hype votes want het is van de maker van Breaking Bad dus het kan niet slecht zijn. Nou dat is het wel, het is echt tenenkrommend slecht. Sheehorn vond ik super in BCS maar hier is ze zo slecht en mateloos irritant dat het voor mij zelfs terugwerkt op BCS. Toegegeven, de eerste 20 minuten zijn nog wel ok en goed doorheen te komen, maar vanaf de infectie begint beginnen ook de plotholes en stort alles als een kaartenhuis ineen. Bijv hoe kan het dat een virus verspreid via vliegtuigen ook mensen binnen besmet? Waarom doet ze geen mond op mond beademing bij het reanimeren van haar vriendin? Nee want dan zou ze besmet raken en dan klopt het plot niet meer. Man man hoe verzin je dit.

Terrible! How this gets a 9 on iMDB is beyond me. I think those are just hype votes, because it's from the creator of Breaking Bad, so it can't be bad.

Well, that's it, it's truly cringe-inducingly bad. I loved Sheehorn in BCS, but here she's so bad and incredibly annoying that it even has a negative effect on BCS for me.

Admittedly, the first 20 minutes are okay and easy to get through, but from the moment the infection starts, the plot holes begin to appear and everything collapses like a house of cards.

For example, how can a virus spread via airplanes also infect people inside? Why doesn't she perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while resuscitating her friend? No, because then she would get infected, and the plot would no longer make sense.

Ik begrijp de hype rond deze serie totaal niet, dit zou niet misstaan op de bommazender BBC First. Echt een vreselijk serie vond ik het, en ik was absoluut niet wild van de prestatie van Seeehorn. De eerste aflevering was nog redelijk, maar daarna begon de ellende, ik geraakte echt geirriteerd door deze onzin. Wat een tijdverlies, bij mij één van de zwakste series van het jaar...

I don't understand the hype surrounding this series at all; it wouldn't be out of place on the bombshell BBC First. I thought it was a truly awful series, and I wasn't thrilled with Seeehorn's performance at all.

The first episode was decent, but after that the trouble started, I got really annoyed by this nonsense.

What a waste of time, one of the weakest series of the year for me...

Vince Gilligan, bekend van The X-Files, Breaking Bad en Better Call Saul, laat opnieuw zijn signatuur zien in Pluribus, het negendelig dystopische sci-fi-drama met een twist van Apple TV+. Wie Gilligans eerdere werk kent, herkent meteen zijn thematische fascinatie voor morele ambiguïteit en ongemakkelijke hoofdpersonages. Centraal staat Carol Sturka, overtuigend gespeeld door Rhea Seehorn. Sturka is mogelijk de ongelukkigste mens ter wereld – en tegelijk een van de meest complexe personages in Gilligans oeuvre. Sturka is boos, agressief en sociaal volstrekt onhandig. Ze belichaamt de Amerikaan die liever alles ziet instorten dan werkelijk contact te maken met de mensen om haar heen. Pluribus ontvouwt zich in een rustig, soms zelfs traag en repetitief tempo. De serie is origineel en fijnzinnig, en laat haar geheimen mondjesmaat los. Na elke aflevering blijft een licht ontwrichtend gevoel achter: waar heb ik naar gekeken? De serie weet dát gevoel om te zetten in nieuwsgierigheid. Tegelijk is Pluribus niet perfect. In een tijdperk van eindeloos lawaai is Pluribus een zeldzame verademing. De serie vraagt om aandacht, geduld en reflectie — een oefening in bezinning. Niet alleen voor Carol Sturka, maar ook voor de kijker.

Vince Gilligan, known for The X-Files, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, once again shows his signature style in Pluribus, the nine-part dystopian sci-fi drama with a twist from Apple TV+. Anyone familiar with Gilligan's previous work will immediately recognize his thematic fascination with moral ambiguity and uneasy protagonists.

At the center of the film is Carol Sturka, convincingly played by Rhea Seehorn. Sturka is possibly the unhappiest person in the world—and simultaneously one of the most complex characters in Gilligan's oeuvre. Sturka is angry, aggressive, and utterly socially awkward. She embodies the American who would rather see everything fall apart than truly connect with the people around her.

Pluribus unfolds at a calm, sometimes even slow and repetitive pace. The series is original and subtle, revealing its secrets little by little. After each episode, a slightly unsettling feeling remains: what have I been watching? The series manages to transform that feeling into curiosity. At the same time, Pluribus isn't perfect.

In an age of endless noise, Pluribus is a rare breath of fresh air. The series demands attention, patience, and reflection—an exercise in contemplation. Not only for Carol Sturka, but also for the viewer.
