Rebus plot

Forty-year-old police detective John Rebus finds himself at a psychological crossroads after an altercation with a notorious Edinburgh criminal. At odds with a career increasingly dominated by corporate technocrats, embroiled in a toxic affair he knows he must end, and nearly ousted from his daughter’s life by his ex-wife’s wealthy new husband, Rebus begins to wonder if he has a role to play as a family man or a police officer. In a world of divisive politics and national discord, does the law even make sense, or is everyone falling back on the old rules? And if so, why shouldn’t Rebus?

Rebus season 1

Actor Richard Rankin (Outlander) is - after John Hannah and Ken Stott in the period 2000 to 2007 - the third incarnation of detective John Rebus based on the books by Ian Rankin. The latest John Rebus is fresher and younger, but still acts unorthodox. Hardboiled, as it should be. With Edinburgh as the location, Scotland is also about drugs and loyalty.

The script by Gregory Burke (Six Four) is clear and well-organized, but fails to stand out. Certainly not because of strong dialogues. For example, Rebus's manager says when he threatens to get her into trouble: 'I just want to retire and drink myself to death in peace'. Empty phrases and superficial texts appear too often in the six episodes. The question remains whether Rebus's new look is enough to survive in the never-ending stream of British crime dramas.
