Funny Woman plot

Barbara leaves sexist Blackpool for London at the start of the swinging sixties, where she is soon discovered by an impresario who arranges a role for her in a sitcom. The team she works with sees her talent, but the broadcast boss has his doubts about this unknown name with a silly-sounding accent. What is decisive, however, is the audience, which falls for her en masse. Now that she's becoming famous, she's going to have some problems, but what bothers Barbara the most is how men waltz over women.

The six-part British Funny Woman - based on the book Funny Girl by Nick Hornby (High Fidelity) - is a light comedy. Barbara Parker (a sparkling Gemma Arterton) moves from narrow-minded Blackpool to cosmopolitan London to make a career in show business. And show business in the 1960s was mainly revue, theatre and sitcoms.

Despite the colorful decor and a number of lighthearted dramatic scenes, Funny Woman lacks depth. The series is reminiscent in concept of the much better Lessons in Chemistry, also about a powerful woman who escapes her environment and the narrow-minded spirit of the times. The humor in Funny Woman is 60s humor. In the series, it is bland and farcical, and does not get beyond the level of the Theater van de Lach. Unfunny Woman.
