Doragon Bôru season 1

Not the biggest anime fan, but I do have a lot of nostalgia for DBZ. Watching the "Z-version" had been on my bucket list for a while (and checked off), but before I ventured into that, I wanted to start at the beginning... with the original Dragon Ball, the series featuring the young Goku.

I enjoyed it. With each season (or arc, or saga), the series gets stronger and more serious, and towards the end, it starts to show the traits of its successor. The first sagas are entertaining, charming, but also childish and never really exciting. Emperor Pilaf is the very first "main villain" and doesn't really amount to much (except for the humor and the amusing dialogue with his henchmen). The Red Ribbon Army then tries to do better and be more serious, but despite that, remains no match for the powerful Goku.

The turning point comes with Mercenary Tao, and from then on, the series really takes off. Goku starts to struggle, and the fights become faster. The last two seasons, featuring King Piccolo and Piccolo Jr., are the most serious and, in my opinion, the best.
