In 1982, Enzo Tortora was at the height of his career. He presented the enormously popular primetime program Portobello, which attracted 28 million viewers weekly. At the same time, a major Neapolitan criminal organization, the Nuova Camorra Organizzata, was in chaos after the earthquake in Irpinia. One of the imprisoned mafiosi and a regular viewer of the show, Giovanni Pandico, decided to become a police informant. During interrogations, he named Enzo Tortora as a member of the criminal organization involved in drug trafficking. On June 17, 1983, the police arrested Tortora in his hotel room. What he initially mistook for a misunderstanding quickly escalated into a years-long ordeal and a dramatic public fall.
