As annoying as I found season 1, so oppressive I find season 2.

The very annoying "This is my design" and the deer appearances, and the caricature of (spoiler for those who have not seen the first half of season 1: Hannibal as a black shadow with antlers) continue to detract do to the strengths that this series is finally getting in this season.

A ridiculous thing that was left out in season 1 has yet to be fixed just as quickly in the beginning of season 2 (the death of Jack Crawford's wife), but after that we look at a species (spoiler for those unfamiliar with the Hopkins movies: Reverse Red Dragon Then things take an interesting turn and (synopsis of episode S02E10: Will pulls more and more into the dark side[/ spoiler]) while successful and less successful references and allusions are made to the films with Anthony Hopkins and the film Hannibal Rising.

The strengths that emerge in this season create a psychological tension for me that I appreciate in a movie or series. However, there are also some unnecessary aspects of the plot that I find unbelievable: the relationship between Alana Bloom and Hannibal, and how easily Will Graham is re-believed and Dr Chilton is accepted as Chesepeake Ripper while Hannibal simply goes free. goes.

'Hannibal' is a bit like a cone with chips, the kind where you have to dig into the mayonnaise with your fingers to fish out the last chips. It doesn't really want to be a culinary masterpiece, but it's fine as a quick bite and a calorie bomb. The continuing storyline continues to focus on the conflict between 'the good' Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and 'the bad' Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), while some other colorful serial killers are put on the scene. It's a bit too much: with bombastic CGI sequences, with a storyline where Dr Lecter really plays where everyone is, with the greatest massacres and a creative use of human bodies. Full of biblical references and final dinners, as if the iconic cannibal is walking like a deity through the perverted kingdom that he himself created. Mads Mikkelsen is a fascinating Hannibal, with his lanky build and that amiable smile on those Scandinavian cheekbones. As in the previous season, it is not very well written and the plot takes bizarre turns. For a series where playing the human psyche plays such an important role, the character psychology of the main characters is sloppy. As with that fries, I still feel guilty that I might have gone better for a full meal.

The level is slightly less compared to the (just a bit more entertaining) first season. Story-wise, apart from the finale, it's okay and the dialogues remain strong, albeit a bit contrived intellectually (no one talks in real life like some of the characters here). An improvement is that a completely bizarre crime scene is no longer consistently shown every episode, although this does occur a number of times. Now it's even more about the manipulations by several characters, especially Hannibal of course but also Will, who slips and Jack, who doesn't shy away from means.

Another difference is the comical note by the (for the viewer pleasant) deranged Jason Verger, played very nicely by Joe Anderson. His sister is also heavily cast. Gillian Anderson (Scully from X Files) on the other hand unfortunately plays much too mechanically, there seems to be no life in it at all. Furthermore, this season contains much less atmosphere and unfortunately the visual delights cannot help that.

The special relationship between Hannibal and Will remains just a bit too out of reach for the viewer. I also got a bit more of the idea that the creators want more and more forced bloodshed for lack of really strong new ideas, making it more of a slasher.

It's clear to me from all the edits that Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs are the only truly excellent Hannibal books by Thomas Harris. The killer from Red Dragon has been omitted, but otherwise much of that story comes back in seasons 1 and 2. They wisely keep their hands off Silence, that film can't be beat. The series deserves praise for the effective and entertaining performance of the Vergers, which was done a bit poorly in Ridley Scott's Hannibal film (1 of his poorest films).
