The first part of the season is mainly about getting hold of Hannibal, through the many enemies he has made. Very loosely based on the book Hannibal by Thomas Harris. Will Graham takes the place of Clarice Starling here, albeit with a very different approach: he is the only one who understands Hannibal and therefore has a perverted and poisoned kind of friendship with him, despite his thirst for revenge.

Despite a magnificent setting in Italy, it looks less beautiful than the previous seasons. Many images are too dark and Canadian director Natali (whom I think highly of because of fantastic films like Cypher, Cube and Nothing) abuses psychedelic images too much. Furthermore, the series suffers from slowness, sometimes to the point of blankness, as well as a lack of new ideas, which sometimes forces even crazier developments in addition to stretching.

Things pick up speed again in the second part of the season by editing Harris's first Hannibal book, Red Dragon. The roles of troubled psycho Francis Dollarhyde and the blind Reba are perfectly filled in and acted and are not inferior to those in the film of the same name.

Unfortunately, the end of the season feels forced again.

If there is going to be a fourth season (which has been speculated about for years), I'll watch it, but otherwise it's fine. The problems now are that the toxic but irresistible relationship between Hannibal and Will has been exhausted by now and that Silence of the Lambs can't be topped after all.

After watching the Anthony Hopkins Hannibal films several times, I finally decided to give this series a try. There was some debate about the order in which you should watch the Hannibal films; there's no such debate with this series. The occasional throwbacks to the past aren't a problem. Season 3, in particular, draws a connection between Hannibal Lecter and the monster of Florence. A miniseries based on true events recently aired about this: Il Mostro (2025). Much has already been said about this Hannibal series. It's an excellent series, but I find season 3 a bit weaker. At some point, the extended dialogue, especially the slow talk with Dr. Bedelia du Maurier (what's in a name...), becomes a bit tedious. However, thanks to the formidable setting and Mikkelsen's top acting, it remains a captivating and exciting whole until the last episode.
