A lot less strong than the first season - but hey, how can you beat that - still I think it's doable. I quite enjoyed the gritty atmosphere and the characters, especially Farrell's role. But the coat rack story about local politics, corruption and criminals didn't interest me much. Too many... characters, plots, settings, that's where the shoe pinches (can't pinpoint it exactly).

The second season may still thematize toxic masculinity amid patriarchal power structures, but the subtle and subcutaneous tension between Rust Cohle and Martin Hart has been replaced by a cartoonish take on masculinity. The last two episodes are laughably over the top in how it showcases that (important in itself) message: full of clichés, stereotypes and with a very black and white rendering of machismo. I don't understand why Nic Pizzolatto didn't have a socially realistic set-up like in the first series, but with Ani Bezzerides in the lead instead of that unbelievable thing between Ray Velcoro and Frank Semyon. This season isn't nearly as bad as it claims, but a lot of potential is lost as it bursts at the seams with pretentious bombast.

Unfortunately in every way less than the first series. In terms of plot, acting, photography, atmosphere, dialogues and so on, this absolutely has to give up. A lot more action scenes, which are quite bloody, so if that's your thing you can give this a chance. The characters are a lot less interesting this time and, even though the eight episodes are quite okay, the story drifts in all kinds of directions, without getting anywhere really interesting or exciting. The mostly static, insanely wacky dialogue scenes sometimes give the whole thing a Twin Peaks-like atmosphere.
