The Addams Family is a satirical version of the ideal American core family. The Addams are an eccentric wealthy family who love everything grotesque and sinister. They are completely oblivious to the fact that others find them strange or terrifying. Bizarrely, the family itself is often terrified of 'normal' people.

Striptekenaar Charles Addams gebruikte z'n eigen familienaam voor een reeks cartoons in de New Yorker. Dankzij deze vroege sitcom werd het excentrieke gezin internationaal populair. Ze wonen in een griezelig huis met levende en opgezette roofdieren. Met hun donkere kleren en make-up lopen ze vooruit op de gotische stijl die een paar decennia later een subcultuur zou worden. Ze dwepen met al wat morbide en luguber is, en amuseren zich met het veroorzaken van kleine explosies. Nochtans doen ze geen vlieg kwaad. Eigenlijk zetten ze zich af tegen de schijnheiligheid en de gemaakte vrolijkdoenerij van de maatschappij. Veel afleveringen volgen een gelijkaardig patroon. Een buitenstaander komt op bezoek en reageert bang en verward. Het gezin zelf lijkt zich niet bewust van z'n eigen excentriciteit. Het meest buitenissige is "het Ding", een hand die zelfstandig beweegt. Er komen een paar bovennatuurlijke zaken in voor, zoals telepathie en voodoo. Morticia lijkt op een heks, maar ze heeft een goed karakter. Carolyn Jones geeft haar iets sinisters en iets zachtaardigs tegelijk. De butler Lurch, gespeeld door de reus Ted Cassidy, heeft wat van het monster van Frankenstein. het is een leuke combinatie van griezelen en lachen. Favoriete afleveringen: 1, 9, 15.

Cartoonist Charles Addams used his own family name for a series of cartoons in the New Yorker. This early sitcom made the eccentric family internationally popular. They live in a creepy house with live and stuffed predators. With their dark clothes and make-up they anticipate the Gothic style that would become a subculture a few decades later. They are infatuated with all that is morbid and lurid, and amuse themselves by causing small explosions. However, they wouldn't hurt a fly. In fact, they rebel against the hypocrisy and mockery of society.

Many episodes follow a similar pattern. An outsider comes to visit and reacts with fear and confusion. The family itself seems unaware of its own eccentricity. The most bizarre thing is "the Thing", a hand that moves independently. There are a few supernatural things involved, such as telepathy and voodoo. Morticia looks like a witch, but she has a good character. Carolyn Jones gives her something sinister and gentle at the same time. The butler Lurch, played by the giant Ted Cassidy, has a bit of Frankenstein's monster. it's a nice combination of horror and laughter.
