A hospital doctor solves a murder every week that the police bite their teeth on. It may not be very believable, but it's fun. They are mostly whodunits, although there are also open book episodes. The crime intrigues aren't particularly original, but the actors' enthusiasm and fast pace are contagious.

Dick Van Dyke puts a lot of humor into his role as a fit senior. He was nearly seventy in this third season, but that didn't stop him from roller skating, scootering, or tap dancing. Everywhere Dr. Mark Sloan shows his disproportionately large nose, a murder is committed. To make it more plausible, he is also a medical adviser to the police. Barry Van Dyke, Dick's son in real life, also plays his son Lt. Steve Sloan who works with the homicide squad. With his muscular upper arms he is suitable for action scenes, but usually he suspects the wrong one. Even more family members sometimes have a secondary role, including grandson Shane Van Dyke.

The series reaches its peak in this third season. This is partly due to the addition of a new character: intern Jesse Travis (Charlie Schlatter), who brings in some youthful candor, replacing the rather dull Dr. Jack. Another favorite is Dr. Amanda Bentley (Victoria Rowell), the charming pathologist anatomist who prides herself on her patients never complaining. Jesse and Amanda go undercover in various environments. Also dr. Sloan himself is not indifferent in this area, for example when he disguises himself as a clochard. It is an easily digestible combination of tension and humor.

Favorite Episodes: 10, 12.
