The Marvels has found an unlikely ally in Stephen King.
The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe feature has been a failure so far for the studio as throughout Friday to Sunday, it recorded the worst-ever box office opening weekend for a movie within the MCU.
Worldwide it has grossed over $100m so far, so there is still a slight hope for profit.
Captain Marvel, The Marvels and star Brie Larson have often been the target of misogynistic trolls who prefer to see male superheroes, and King is unhappy with those online who are revelling in the failures of the new movie.
“I don’t go to MCU movies, don’t care for them, but I find this barely masked gloating over the low box office for ‘The Marvels’ very unpleasant,” the legendary horror novelist wrote on X.
“Some of the rejection of ‘The Marvels’ may be adolescent fanboy hate. You know, ‘Yuck! GIRLS!'”
Samuel L. Jackson supports Brie Larson over trolls
Samuel L. Jackson previously defended co-star Larson from the seemingly endless abuse the actress receives for her role as Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The pair have worked together on a number of projects in the past including Unicorn Store, Kong: Skull Island, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and The Marvels.
When Larson was announced to play Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel, she received online hate as the movie was going to be the first female-led feature within the MCU.
The situation reached a point where she considered leaving the role before The Marvels.
Jackson urged his friend to ignore the idiots.
"We bonded through the election while we were doing her movie (Unicorn Store) when Donald Trump won. She was broken and I was like, 'Don't let 'em break you. You have to be strong now,'" Jackson recalled to Rolling Stone.
"Then, when she got Captain Marvel, she called me and was like, 'They want me in the Marvel Universe. Should I do it?' And I was like, 'Hell yeah! Let's do it!'
"She's not going to let any of that stuff destroy her. These incel dudes who hate strong women, or the fact that she's a feminist who has an opinion and expressed it? Everybody wants people to be who they want them to be. She is who she is, and she's genuinely that."
