Dakota, c. 1880. Former trapper Sandy McKinzie, fed up with hunting and killing buffalo, has become a rancher. One day, Sandy's entire herd is killed by a stampeding herd of buffalo. Sandy then meets buffalo hunter Charlie Gilson, who sees buffalo killing as a sport, just like killing Native Americans. Sandy, now unemployed, decides to join Charlie to return to buffalo hunting. Sandy and Charlie are joined by the old one-legged alcoholic “Woodfoot” and the young half-breed Indian Jimmy. En route, in revenge on some Native Americans who stole their horses, cruel Charlie kidnaps a squaw with a toddler she's adopted and considers her all his property. This causes great tension between Charlie and the rest of the party and a bloody encounter seems inevitable.
