A good Western with a simple but enjoyable story. The film moves along nicely, thanks to the numerous action scenes that certainly don't look bad for the 1930s. John Wayne plays the role I've come to expect from him: the man who has to solve the problems, and who, of course, succeeds.

What really bothered me about the film were the songs John Wayne "sang." They were far too long and didn't really add anything to the film.

And then there's Lawless Range from the John Wayne box set, which is definitely a bit less impressive than The Arizona Skies, although that wasn't a great film either.

That beautiful old-school feel works well for now, with its black and white, but Lawless Range doesn't really captivate me, despite the straightforward, reasonably fast-paced story. The whole thing just doesn't quite gel. The chemistry with the co-star is nonexistent, Wayne's role is too repetitive, not to mention those odd songs that definitely aren't sung by Wayne himself. Another difference from the other two films in this box set is the music, which places much more emphasis on the film and doesn't always feel quite right.

It almost goes without saying that this film was quite disappointing and certainly does not deserve a passing grade in my opinion.

John Wayne in an early Western. Dressed in white and riding a white horse, he's undeniably the hero. Such a flashy outfit didn't seem very practical in a film where Wayne is chasing the bad guys to protect innocent civilians. It seemed wiser to be as inconspicuous as possible rather than dressing like a circus performer in hostile territory. The antagonist does a better job. He's dressed in black, of course.

John Wayne versus vile bankers and mean cattle rustlers. I found it a rather tiresome film. Wayne is harassed and captured but always manages to escape. How is it all possible!? Well, it's easy when the scum you're fighting is acting completely dull. Nice for Wayne, but of course, that's not very exciting. More like laughable.

There's more that's hilarious. At one point, Wayne, mounted on his white horse and armed with a guitar, even breaks into a song. I was startled. And later in the film, he does it again. I was startled again. Incidentally, Wayne doesn't sing himself; he lip-syncs the whole thing. Nevertheless, it was quite a shock.

There's not much else to tell. Wayne triumphs and finally gets the woman, who barely plays a role and really only appears in the film to make that happy ending possible. Lawless Range is only 55 minutes long. Fortunately, that was manageable. It also helped that I burst out laughing at several points. Lawless Range is a fine film for the die-hard John Wayne fan, I think. Not for people like me.
