The Heroes of Telemark plot

"Unarmed and outnumbered, they stunned the world with their incredible victory."

In the autumn of 1942, the Norwegian resistance movement, supported by the English, plans a sabotage action against Norsk Hydro, a power station in Telemark, in central Norway. This installation is vital for the Germans because it produces heavy water for making an atomic bomb. Air raids prove ineffective. When it becomes known that the Germans are going to transfer the entire stock of heavy water by ferry, this seems to be the only way to prevent the Germans from having the material to produce an atomic bomb.

A war film from the list that I had not yet seen or have in my collection, made possible this afternoon by the BBC. And I have to say that it was a little disappointing despite the solid impression the film left. The point is always that you compare a film from that time and genre, sabotage / espionage action, with The Guns Of Navarone or the great Where Eagles Dare. Films that The Heroes Of Telemark cannot possibly approach.

By the way, I have deliberately not delved into the true background. The titles mentioned above are also not true stories and although Telemark does contain true elements, my intention was not to judge them too heavily, or not at all, and just watch the film. And what you're left with are two decent names in the form of Douglas and Harris, a pretty drawn-out story that has the quality that it feels realistic in its failure and improvisation, beautiful locations and landscapes and a more than reasonable picture of the grit and doggedness of the Norwegian resistance. It also credits the film that the last plan must go ahead, even if innocent victims are claimed.

Lesser aspects I think are the characters Rolf and Knut that don't really appeal to me, and those little things like the escape from the factory where a lot of shots are fired by the Germans but no one is hit, and how Rolf and Knut are fairly open and naked with submachine gun in hand sneaking around on their latest action. Apparently the Germans who were paying attention and could shoot well were at the front. The exploding tank in the beginning is also a horror but unfortunately fashion at the time.

It makes The Heroes Of Telemark an enjoyable war film from the old school and perhaps there will be an increase in grades with time. I'm on the frugal side at the moment. By the way, they could make beautiful movie posters in those days, nice piece of nostalgia.

This is one of those films that seems to come up on the BBC every year around Christmas (sometimes it's even aired in the summer), which I then watch every so often, only to watch it over the next few years. hit (because he's not that good anymore).

Actually, with this movie I have a bit the same as what I also have with "Operation Crossbow":

although based on true events, it is just too simplistic and too much on Tintin level for me, but on the other hand too serious to consider it merely as a spectacular war adventure film, such as "The Guns of Navarone" and "Where Eagle's Dare".

As a viewer, you also have to take for granted that two well-known actors, an American and an Irishman, must pass for Norwegians and that it is sometimes more James Bond than a realistic war film.

Nevertheless, this film offers enough interesting developments, the necessary tension and the finale is quite spectacular. Enough for me to watch it every few years anyway.

A big seven, or 3.5 stars.

Old-fashioned craftsmanship, this war film loosely based on true history. It's a bit spruced up, but not so much that it really detracts from the facts. And filmed at the scene of the action, in part with the right language for everyone, although it will be English if you are meant to understand it for following the plot. Quite an original idea, and a pity that it has not found more imitation.

I also read the book once, and there are a lot of details that didn't make it into the movie. And vice versa, some of what you see in the film didn't happen exactly like that - pretty obvious, the more heroic action at the end, the romantic plot. But unlike many other films, it hardly bothers me in this case. Harris and Douglas play their iron-eating roles just fine, which helps a lot.
