So Proudly We Hail! plot

"The First Great Love Story of Our Women at the Fighting Front!"

In December 1941, a group of US Army nurses leave San Francisco for Hawaii. However, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor changes their journey and with it their lives. They are sent to Bataan, in the Philippines, where they come under the command of Lieutenant Janet Davidson (Claudette Colbert). Lieutenant Davidson soon learns that she is dealing with a group of inexperienced sisters who thought they were having a good time in Honolulu. But there is not much time for fun, because a continuous stream of wounded soldiers has to be cared for with a minimum of medical aids.

American propaganda film made in the middle of the war, when the battle for the Philippines was still in full swing. The film starts very well, but despite the violence of war, the story gradually takes on a weak character.
War or no war, the filmmakers adhere neatly to the rules of the Hays Code. Before George Reeves and Claudette Colbert spend their last night together, they first get married as the moral crusaders of the time demanded. I have often wondered to what extent the moviegoers of the time believed that edifying nonsense.
Of the cast, Paulette Goddard and Veronica Lake stand out thanks to their characters, who at least appear to have some real emotions. Unfortunately, Lake's role is played out far too quickly. The rest of the cast seems to suffer from collective resignation.
In the middle of the war, this propaganda film will probably have had an impact on the (American) public, but there is little left of it now.

Quite a long film in which the story is told through a long flashback of a group of nurses who are just on their way to Australia from a war zone.

One of the women is in an apathetic state and we see her story and that of her colleagues through a long flashback.

The film is quite grand and a kind of tribute to the nurses who signed up for active duty in the Pacific.

Of course it is all quite romanticized, but the characters are built up well and gradually you as a viewer start to sympathize with them.

This film was made during wartime, so it clearly has a kind of propaganda-like message, but that is not that disturbing.
