De Overval plot

The raid on the House of Detention in Leeuwarden on 8 December 1944 is one of the most spectacular and bold acts of resistance of the last year of the war. An impeccably worked out plan preceded it, because no shot was allowed to be fired so as not to alarm the nearby Germans. The intention was to free as many as thirty-nine previously selected detained resistance members from the prison complex within half an hour. This life-threatening resistance action was carried out by about twenty illegal workers from all walks of life.

Beautiful unknown war film that I didn't know.

Story is good and I didn't know that from the war either.

The actors are all good.

The editing was sometimes too dark and you occasionally hear noise, but what do you want from a film from 62.

But why black and white?

3.5 stars

Nice film adaptation for that time. Of course it bears the time stamp (55 years!), but you can actually easily get over that, although the first part with the preparations for the robbery seems more realistic than the actual robbery itself, which is surprisingly quiet.

Nevertheless, surprisingly enjoyable and neatly performed.

Not quite what I had hoped for, nevertheless solid and interesting, and I think I have seen it before, even though I can't remember much about it.

Interesting detail anyway that I am Frisian myself and live not far from Leeuwarden, in addition, the northwestern Frisian region was known for many resistance activities and some other skirmishes. An 'action' of this magnitude should of course not be missing. I believe the recordings were made on site in the De Blokhuispoort itself, and the recognizable bridge and Emmakade next to the prison. The central focus is of course the extensive plan of the KP (Knok Ploeg), as resistance groups were usually called in Friesland, the many people involved and the successful and extremely skilled and disciplined action itself. I don't know whether the somewhat atmospheric, dry tone, almost documentary-like style, without music, will turn out so well. Perhaps people at that time paid too little attention to this, despite the cooperation of Bert Haanstra, who was still able to shoot a quite atmospheric film.

Nevertheless, the tension is there when the action starts. The peace, all the liberated people, but also everyone who was told to remain seated, is captivating. The scene with the banging on the doors is also dramatic. Something that perhaps deserves some attention is the fact that the action provoked heavy reprisals.

The Heist initially disappointed me, but offered enough quality and solidity that I would definitely give the film another try because the history and film are certainly interesting.
