The Ipcress File plot

"The spy story of the century."

Former thief Harry Palmer has now (involuntarily) become a spy. He is tasked with finding the missing Doctor Radcliffe, who, like two colleagues before him, has disappeared. The doctor has a file that could be extremely dangerous for the Western world. It turns out that the enemy wants to brainwash the doctor, while Harry's boss secretly negotiates with them.

What a film. Atmosphere, beautiful cinematography, great soundtrack, and of course, the fantastic Caine. 3.75* Underrated here.

A good film in which a spy is tasked with finding a missing scientist. The slow plot, which accelerates especially in the latter part, is secondary to the atmosphere of this action-free espionage thriller. A fairly raw look, unusual camerawork, beautiful music by John Barry, and a delightfully dry performance by Michael Caine. A small 3.5 stars.

After the disappointing "The Jigsaw Man" a few weeks ago, I tried another spy film starring Michael Caine. And of course, this one was much better.

A recognizable James Bond-esque allure is emanated by the opening, combined with the music. Incidentally, the score is by John Barry, who wrote the music for no fewer than 11 Bond films. However, once Harry is introduced to his work, the James Bond vibe quickly fades away. Although Harry has his charm and is a ladies' man, the film doesn't have the character of a Bond film afterward, as it all takes place on the sober streets of London. There's no real spectacular action, but what The Ipcress File does have is a beautiful and solid buildup that, while slow, is incredibly atmospheric. Moreover, the time period with the cars is always beautiful. Also striking is the beautiful camerawork and cinematography, with several remarkably symmetrical shots, such as Caine looking one way in the parking garage and Green looking the other. Or the showdown at the end with Green and Doleman facing Caine. Beautiful, truly beautiful.

Downsides...? Not really. But the film isn't entirely above average either, perhaps because of my first viewing and not knowing what to expect. So, a steady 3.5 for now, perhaps more later.
