The title sounded appealing. But that was the only thing appealing. It's a pretty big feat if you stick with the movie. The plot twist that you expect after a few minutes will unfortunately also come true. It's just been used so many times that the pathetic female ends up being the femme fatale going for the money.
It's a real B-movie that I think takes itself a bit seriously and was once made to make an A-movie.
I also found it so vague that Magruder arrives a little later at Dossen's house as Downey Jr. and suddenly a few minutes later we see that he is dead on a ship. I would have loved to have seen the murder and what they said to Downey Jr. before they did this. It was pretty rushed.
Embeth Davidtz is a beautiful girl (nice that I only recognized her from Californocation after a few minutes), but I never once saw her as a femme fatale. The anger she shows on the ship at the end is downright ridiculous.

No, this movie is not worth more than 1 star.

Moderate thriller. It's a shame that the confluence of circumstances and coincidences that send the main character into a downward spiral are not really smoothly brought. It's just not all. Also a bit because of the actors who have little appearance. As a result, Duvall has a greater impact. A fantastic actor in any case, also easily steals every scene he is in. Unfortunately, they are not in the majority. Downey does his thing, Branagh is still good with his 'southern' accent and then you come to Davidtz, completely flat (literally and figuratively) bitch. No wonder we don't see them more often.

Finally THE moment of the movie:

- Actually every time Duvall is in the picture the film comes alive, but his mates laughing in court after he shreds a document demonstratively are also worth mentioning.

How strange, those low ratings (although I'm not that far above in my final rating). Found it very solid. I have not seen the Altman stamp, I think it was really just a hired hand here. There are two indications to me for the low valuation everywhere. The most charismaless protagonist ever and the obligatory plot twist that belongs to a neo noir/film noir. How predictable that is. How many movies like that have we seen? It also didn't seem right because the femme fatale could never have foreseen the result of many actions, such as the escape and it was not at all certain that her father would be shot in this way.

In addition, it is reasonably atmospheric, quite exciting, nice supporting roles and it looks easy. That's why I don't (completely) understand the low rating. Perhaps it is the promissory note of an Altman with a star cast, after a work by Grisham. In short, thought it made up for the entertainment, with a few serious cosmetic flaws. Somewhere between 3 and 3.5 stars. To judge my intention more rigorously gives him the benefit of the doubt.
