Frederick Forsyth's stories always guarantee a solid thriller. That is also the basis of this film and I am glad that the film translation has not fallen into 80's cliché/kitch situations. It has become a real Cold War spy thriller without the necessary fuss. It is the first John Mackenzie film that I have seen, but I have to admit that he can portray a good atmosphere. Maybe because for once it is not an American film in this genre, but a British one.

The cast isn't too bad either. Pierce Brosnan is here in one of his first film roles after his career with Remington Steele. To think that around that time he was already asked to succeed Roger Moore as James Bond. If you see him here, I can understand that, but he was still too young for 007. Goldeneye dates from 8 years after this film. Michael Caine is of course the star of this film. He is a spy with a large dose of British detective. This is certainly going well for him. We also notice Ned Beatty, Julian Glover (James Bond's enemy in For your eyes only) and Michael Cough (just like Michael Caine once played Alfred for Batman in the Burton versions).

The film is certainly not poorly made, but it is also nothing more than that. I suppose this works much better as a book, but as a film it's not as overwhelmingly good. Still, my compliments to composer Lalo Schifrin, a great man who was once rejected as composer of The Exorcist because the audience found his music too scary. Speaking of atmosphere.

The conclusion is that this film is certainly not bad. Maybe a stronger ending and a little more spice here and there. But ultimately The Fourth Protocol is a somewhat underrated film, which is better than its score would lead you to believe.

Third Forsyth in a short time after The Dogs Of War and The Day Of The Jackel and certainly not the best. In this case, I am also not familiar with the book, so there is no feedback as to what extent it is being followed correctly or not.

Some beautiful Russian landscapes, that's what it has to be like, alternate the long run-up. Preston's introduction, counterintelligence and working methods in particular require a lot of effort and do not always add much. The film only starts to come alive after about fifty minutes with Petrofsky on the scene and the execution of his plan. It is the same phase in which Preston comes across something that does not always seem logical and seems to be based on guesswork and intuition rather than evidence, and work is being done on a reasonably exciting second part.

Yet, with the exception of the better second part, it is all a bit on the meager side, even though Caine is in good shape and Brosnan also manages to convince, and the settlement between the two secret services has a lot of political and political cronyism. strategic choices for one's own honor, glory and status. Well...reasonable, but certainly nothing more. 2.6 would have been appropriate.

Nice film in which a Russian secret agent comes to England to commit an attack. An old-fashioned spy thriller with a fairly complicated plot (especially at the beginning), but it is well put together. A bit long-winded at times, but towards the end it really gets exciting. Easily 3.0 stars.
