A complex combination of fantasy, family drama and whodunit revolves around nine-year-old Louis Drax [Aiden Longworth], who has escaped death eight times in his short life as a result of a life-threatening accident. When he falls off a cliff, he narrowly escapes drowning, but ends up in a deep coma. His doctor [Jamie Dornan] questions the circumstances of this bizarre accident, partly because in his 'dreams' he has contact with Louis, who shares his life story (including the 8 previous accidents) with him.
Director Alexandra Aja beautifully shapes the dream sequences, but the combination of dream and reality is sometimes a bit confusing. Moreover, the story swings back and forth between different genres for a long time and that is a bit discouraging. The last quarter is a lot better and makes up for a lot, but until then it's not always easy to keep your head up.

Also The 9th Life of Louis Drax from a few years ago, a pretty nice idea in design, the photography is also perfectly fine, only the execution leaves something to be desired.
The actually fairly simple story is served up with numerous flashbacks unnecessarily complex, which takes the momentum out of the film and the interest wanes every now and then. And then this combination of mystery, fantasy and thriller may seem a bit more, but in the end it remains you as a viewer are a bit disappointed.
Furthermore, The 9th Life of Louis Drax is quite an entertaining film, but with Aja at the helm I generally expect something more.

I wouldn't call this a success. Visually very nicely done but substantively I still don't know what it was actually about. The subject of child abuse is lurking around the corner but nothing else comes out strongly and that's why this feels like an incoherent film that tries just about everything. The ending is completely pointless and doesn't make it any better. Psychological dramas with some fantasy and complicated story structures are hip, but do it right and choose at least one well-defined theme that you want to deal with. Here it is neither mussel nor fish. Small 2.5*
