Leanne just falls short of the grades she needs at school to get a scholarship to Harvard. This is because of history, and especially because of the teacher Mrs. Tingle, who hates her. After being falsely accused of cheating, she goes to Mrs. Visit Tingle at home with some friends in the evening. However, the visit doesn't go quite as planned...

Mediocre film in which three students take a teacher hostage after they are caught cheating. The film itself starts well, but the characters remain too superficial. It also never gets exciting and the dialogues could have been a lot sharper. Helen Mirren tries to make the most of her role.

Funny that this movie is known as a thriller. It doesn't get exciting anywhere. teaching Tingle is satire with some humorous moments. There is also a romantic subplot but it cannot have a name.
Of the actors, Mirren and Coughlan are by far the best performing. Holmes and Watson are mostly boring. I think the film also wants to say something about tyrannical teachers and the pressure that is placed on students, but it is all too good for that. Just a smooth teen movie of which thousands were made in the 90's.

Quite a dull and silly thriller. And that while Kevin Williamson was very highly regarded after his success with Scream. But his directorial debut is not good. All the ingredients befitting a 90s high school thriller are there, from the supposedly hip dialogues to the soundtrack full of emo-rock songs. The teenagers themselves are just boring characters, it is mainly Helen Mirren who has to save the day. She plays such a clichéd crank, where no one can ever do anything right. From the moment the revenge act begins, she even turns into a kind of Hannibal Lecter, who seems to be in control all the time and tries to manipulate the three teenagers.
This premise could still work nicely, but it is never exciting. Williamson finds the humor more important and so the film occasionally becomes an outright farce, especially when Jeffrey Tambor appears on the scene. Unfortunately, in addition to being exciting, it never gets really funny, which makes this comic thriller quite fail on its two main points. Williamson can't help but refer to other films, so The Exorcist comes up a few times. The most hilarious part is how the movie has been censored and the 'fuck me' has been replaced quite obviously with 'take me'. Even the title is a bit of censorship, the movie was actually called Killing Mrs. Tingle and was modified by a real event. In the end it doesn't matter, the silly title Teaching Mrs. Tingle ultimately suits this rather dull end product much better. It's not surprising that Williamson didn't get much to do quite soon after the 90s.
