A somewhat old-fashioned crime mystery, which mainly suffers from the fact that the plot is not very well put together and relies heavily on presumed or not prejudices about corruption within the KGB.

William Hurt is miscast as the incorruptible cop. Someone like Jon Voight or Klaus Maria Brandauer would have fit in that role much better. On the other hand, Lee Marvin, Brian Dennehy and Joanna Pacula deliver solid work and thus lift the film to a satisfactory level.

Soviet thriller that starts very mysteriously and in that way manages to hold the attention. It's not extremely complicated, but you have to keep track of your thoughts and keep following them. A Russian agent has to solve a triple murder and comes on the trail of corruption at the KGB and an American fur trader.

Despite Gorky Park was not filmed in the former SU, the makers still manage to give a credible picture of a gray police state. You have to take the American-with-Russian-accent speaking actors. Good interplay by the actors. Only, to my regret, they have spared Hurt's character from too great difficulties during the survey, which causes the tension to come to a halt towards the end. Tight 3.5*

Atmospheric and captivating film. I really liked the slow build-up: but very slowly I realized what it was all about in the end. Lee Marvin plays an excellent role as a villain who thinks he is untouchable. And this time it wasn't about drugs or state secrets, but about smuggling six minks out of the country, which would break the Russian monopoly. As said, something I only realized late, but that could be just me.

I still see the DVD for sale.
