Funny Games plot

"A nightmare."

Two apparently cultured young men terrorize and mistreat a family for no apparent reason. Anna, George and their son Georgie have just arrived at their holiday home. While Anna takes care of the food, her husband and son are going to rig the boat. Suddenly Peter is at the door; a boy who comes to borrow a few eggs on behalf of the neighbors. He behaves in an irritatingly clumsy way and makes no move to leave. Moments later, his friend Paul is also in the hallway. In an extremely polite manner, the boys are brutal and despite her request they refuse to leave the house. George also cannot escape their intrusive behaviour. It soon becomes apparent that the relaxed summer holiday that had begun turns into a horrific nightmare.

At first glance, Funny Games seems to be turning into a slasher like we've seen so many times. However, nothing could be further from the truth, because the poster and introduction are quite misleading. Funny Games is more like a Home invasion, but then again it's not.

An Austrian family arrives at their holiday home. They are harassed by two pushy teenagers and then their vacation turns into a real nightmare.

The combination of Opera, metal and violence is of course quite Argentoesque and the structure of the story is very Hitchcockian. The film is another good example of the Resevoir Dogs effect. Almost all shocking moments are out of the picture and yet the film gives the impression of being very shocking.

The joke is that Michael Haneke thinks he hasn't made a Horror movie at all. He sees his film as an indictment of the way in which violence is presented in the media. That is why the character Paul often breaks the so-called fourth wall to address the audience "Do we still find it entertaining?".

All in all, Funny Games is a very special film. On the one hand we have the ultra-realistic acting of Ulrich Mühe and Susanne Lothar and on the other hand the almost comical Paul and Peter who even break through the fourth wall. All in all, an interesting film about sadism, which is also quite realistic. If two young people with a golf club walk into your holiday home and cripple the master of the house, you are completely powerless.

I may have seen them in the wrong order but I thought this one was just as bad as the movie Secuestrados (2010) pretty much the same for me; all very unlikely.

Uncomfortable movie. Not just because we are left in the dark about the motives of the hostage takers. Not because of the brutality with which they went to work, but the unpleasant feeling came over me when that psychopath Paul addressed me directly, the viewer. As if I were a disaster tourist, a voyeur who got a kick out of the circumstances. Powerlessness too, because I can't do anything from my seat. All fiction, of course, but still. Haneke took a good look at this in order to add an extra dimension to his film.

Now even apart from this, Haneke creates a certain tension with his docu-like style. Camera shots and points of view were carefully chosen in a certain calm, all building up to the climax. Even the humor is not lacking, because although the horror is staged, the film also has its playful, light-hearted moments. The way in which the crooks gain access to the house and make the residents doubt their own actions is a good example of this.

One thing I was very sorry about. That was not the film, but the DVD cover. What miscreant gets it into his head to reveal the full plot line? It says in black and white that the family is being murdered. Beyond suspense, just in the way it was a bit of a wait...
