Capricorn One plot

"The mission was a sham. The murders were real."

Houston, 1985. Moments before NASA's first manned spaceflight, Capricorn 1 to Mars, is due to take place, the three astronauts are taken to an abandoned base, where their boss Kelloway informs them that their spacesuits are not usable for spaceflight. To prevent the president from reducing the financial resources for NASA's space program after this capital blunder, the Capricorn 1 is launched without a crew. The launch of the spacecraft goes ahead for the television-watching world anyway, and the astronauts are forced to participate in a simulated landing. When the spaceship explodes after its supposed return from Mars, the astronauts understand that they will never be able to return home...

Still a pretty nice because soberly developed thriller with a typical 1970s paranoia plot, decent dialogues and still reasonable action scenes (of course less spectacular than in the CGI-crazy 21st century, but that makes not off). The first half is the strongest, with the intriguing set-up and a fine Hal Holbrook, but the second half sadly gets bogged down in more standard action with the three astronauts in the desert, with Telly Savalas in a humorous role that soon becomes gets on my nerves and a closing scene in retarded slow-motion with the running astronaut and journalist plus triumphant music. David Huddleston's wonderful role as the sucking Congressman Hollis Peaker, almost a blueprint for Philip Seymour Hoffman, and that red-black-checkered shirt that Elliott Gould thinks he can wear under his jacket is very special seventies. Ah, great entertainment.

Ordered this movie last week and watched it over the weekend.

In the eighties this film was broadcast on various TV channels (Veronica, Belgium), but after that I had never seen it again. Still, this typical 1970s paranoia film has always stayed with me, because the premise is intriguing to say the least and clearly a nod to the conspiracy theory that the moon landing is fake.

Brolin stars as an astronaut, who along with colleagues Waterston and -then national sports hero- Simpson are blackmailed into participating in this fraudulent plot (otherwise the plane carrying their respective families will be blown out of the sky) to prevent, on news of the failure of this trip to Mars, the money tap will be turned off for future NASA space projects

This is delivered quite believable and worded extremely viciously by Holbrook, so that you as a viewer can go along with it and it could not be completely inconceivable.

The second half of the film contains the action and spectacle, when the three manage to escape and the government officials are in pursuit. It is striking that the government is portrayed here as extremely unreliable, ruthless and dangerous and is thus portrayed as "the bad guy".

The film also contains two very well portrayed chases: first you get the scene where Gould finds out that his car has been tampered with, causing the brakes to stop working. Really great job!

At the end you also have the chase in the air with the plane of Savalas, which has to compete against two heavily armed government helicopters.

After all these years, this semi-classic hasn't lost any of its shine and is definitely worth a try, although I will also have at least a hint of youth sentiment.

An eight or four stars.

revised. Still a great 70s movie full of conspiracies and paranoid ideas, which many films from that decade are full of. Visually, the film does not offer much, it is mainly the strong plot that should lead the way, but the long action scene in the final, with helicopters and a plane, is certainly there. The laconic play of the protagonists and the dry humor sometimes detract from the tension, but all in all this is still a great thriller. And what a cast.
