Always Shine

Nice film about a not-so-great friendship, which turns into a nightmare after a short holiday. The biggest plus point of Always Shine is the amazing acting of Davis, who manages to turn Anna into a pitiful but above all evil character. Without turning Anna into a caricature (which could easily have been done). FitzGerald is not great and the characters remain very one-dimensional, but it is atmospheric. Sophia Takal's direction is idiosyncratic, with some nice editing choices and close-ups.

Intelligently written, complex psychological drama with thriller elements invites repeat viewing. It focuses on two friends who spend a weekend together in the hope of rekindling their friendship. Anna [Mackenzie Davis] and Beth [Caitlin FitzGerald] are both actresses but Beth has had more success and that leads to Anna's remorse, especially when Beth turns down a screenplay offered to her.

Lawrence Michael Levine's screenplay cunningly misleads you in the scene where we are introduced to Anna, making it clear that you are dealing with a film that plays with expectations and slowly hands you the individual pieces of a puzzle that you may not be able to put together completely on the first try. Under the intelligent direction of Sophia Takal, Davis delivers an intense, yet controlled performance that creates an uncomfortable tension until the surprising ending, which is reinforced by the contrasting, subdued playing of FitzGerald.

This thriller film by director Sophia Takal consists mainly of a lot of nonsense and all kinds of additional nonsense. When the escalation finally starts to set in, it is already far too late, because by then the viewer has been stuck with Caitlin FitzGerald's nonsensical character (equally miserably acted) for almost an hour. Fortunately, Mackenzie Davis seems to understand the intensity of her character and does not act as if she has to read a few sentences from a cardboard sign. The argument between the two ladies is well designed and revives a film like Always Shine, but that is also ultimately cut short for some annoying romance story. Nothing wrong with the political layer and Davis wears a good part of the movie, but I haven't often seen such a boring thriller event. Regularly having to make serious efforts to let the minutes pass without checking the time.
