Difficult film to review. I certainly understand the high ratings from many. Helter Skelter is a visually beautiful film, in which model Lilico suffers both physically and especially mentally after many plastic surgical procedures. The film is also quite impressive in terms of acting and atmosphere, I really believed the hysterical Japanese idol setting and the tremendous psychological pressure. But still (and I also see that the film also criticizes this a lot), the setting in which superficial beauty and commercialism reign supreme and the hysterical bullshit that goes with it often irritated me. Definitely worth it, interesting film in terms of subject and effect, but it wasn't exactly my cup of tea.

The film is reminiscent of Perfect Blue, which has also been mentioned here. I admit that if Onderhond gives a film 5*, it really is questionable whether that is my thing. We already have more similarities than before, but in some areas we differ enormously.

The story of beauty and the pressure in the modeling world. Doing anything to be beautiful, but even if it is manufactured, that beauty is ephemeral. A life full of excitement in the here and now. But also a world in which not only beauty is fake, but everything around it. Love, friendship, loyalty, promises, ... Perfect Blue (and the influenced film Black Swan) can better portray the rise and fall with a penetrating atmosphere. I missed that with Helter Skelter. He makes up for a lot by never straying and always remaining interesting. Both visually and in terms of events. It is busy in a good way with a lot of kitch, which in this case is not only a style but also fits the subject. And especially the colors are incredibly beautiful.

On the same level as Perfect Blue and Black Swan, but certainly not necessarily the same film. A very pleasant surprise.

Visually neat and fairly unique drama film by director Mika Ninagawa, whose colorful photography really appeals to me and therefore applies well to the interpretation of Helter Skelter. However, the substantive addition did nothing for me and that is annoying, because users who I usually hold in high regard are very enthusiastic about this film. There is little wrong with the acting, except that the characters themselves simply don't appeal to me. Erika Sawajiri's psychological transformation also seems relatively random (despite the context around it being clearly spelled out), the pressure/urge of which I simply couldn't place. In between, Ninagawa comes up with pushy sex scenes that go on for ages, but have little else to say and I think that's where my general disappointment lies. Films that rely heavily on conscious (sexual) discomfort rarely appeal to me in this type of visual environment, which is why Helter Skelter also loses out. That does not alter the fact that there are quite strong, gloomy scenes in the whole that are almost impossible to leave your retina.

By the way, I have rarely heard such an ugly lyrical interpretation of Canon in D.
