It's recommended that you first see Tim Burton's biopic 'Ed Wood' before venturing into this hilariously bad SF horror. Watch a cop straighten his cap with a loaded gun, see a cross in a cemetery suddenly stand out, and have fun with what must pass for UFOs roaming the United States. The opening with Bela Lugosi is cringe-inducing and frankly downright sad, as Lugosi was already severely weakened and would die a short time later. Lugosi's stand-in (Wood's much too tall chiropractor, who constantly holds his cloak in front of his face) adds to the celebration. Often praised as the worst film of all time, but anyone who dares to watch 'Bride of the Monster' or 'Glen or Glenda' will have to sleep on it. So work on the shop!

This classic, albeit for the wrong reasons, has been re-watched. And it's quite a tough one. Ed Wood means well and it does have its charm, but there is so much flashy shit here. The story is already bad for 50's pulp standards, and to get it explained we often need an annoying voiceover. The sets are super cheap: you create an alien base by putting a table in front of a curtain and then have people in glittery suits speak English to each other, and the flying saucers are legendary. Woody actors, weak dialogues, it was all not easy. I've seen it worse, but not much worse - although it still has a bit of charm.

Intriguing.

I knew the title of the Tim Burton movie about Ed Wood, the filmmaker who was too ambitious for his naivety or too naive for his ambition. Plan 9 from Outer Space is said to be one of the worst movies ever, but of course it isn't.

One should also not try to judge this film as a serious film. Just like The Room, for example, this is just a genre in itself: a kind of low budget project, made by someone who has a thousand and one ideas but can't tell a straightforward story at all.

Apart from a straightforward story, there are many other things that raise eyebrows. Scene transitions, one-liners or even entire dialogues that make no sense, detectives who scratch their heads with a gun, ... It's all pretty amateurish but sometimes just funny.

So it's clear that Wood's lack of talent (and budget) gets in the way of a solid film, but even then it's manageable. I can appreciate the effort made in trying to create a world of my own and in any case it is a must for anyone who is a movie buff. Wood was clearly also an enthusiast, unfortunately not a talented one.
