Well... the main characters meet and spend one evening together, and then they pine for each other for years – is that romantic or pathological? In the meantime, we each follow their own lives, with John Cusack taking advantage of the presence of the articulate and sensible Jeremy Piven and the very witty Eugene Levy, while Kate Beckinsale is stuck with an eclectic musician who reminded me of a well-stocked Heath Ledger. In between there are some reflections on fate, chance and destiny, but to say that they go into depth with them – well no. But what really gives me a bad taste in my mouth is how the beautiful Bridget Moynahan, Cusack's beautiful and sweet friend, without doing anything wrong (except to be his girlfriend instead of mine), just like that. -and off-screen!- is kicked out of the film just because the script is intended for Cusack to find his Great Unknown Love again at the end – and then Moynahan also has to use the instrument of their divorce (the book by Marquez) to deliver! (Beckinsale's friend also has to leave the film through the back door, but at least he gets a certain egocentrism in the stomach from the script writer.) This often happens in rom-coms (by His girl Friday to Something's gotta give), and I know I shouldn't take it all so seriously, but if I'm supposed to enjoy lovehappiness but not love[ i]sadness[/i] I don't feel taken seriously after all. The fact that, despite everything, the film doesn't even leave me with such a bad feeling, has everything to do with the beautiful song in which Jonathan and Sara find each other during the last scene: Northern sky van Nick Drake – almost a better song than the movie deserves.

A typical women's film, very boring and very sweet as far as I'm concerned.

Always an engaging and entertaining film that in my opinion is too serious and, above all, misinterpreted.

A special meeting between John and Sara takes place, a moment where the spark is somewhat hesitant. Surrounded by doubt and restraint, and a little flirty with fate, Sara mostly lets it run its course to find herself stuck with a pretty hazy guy so many years later. John seems to have it better with the lovely Halley, something that also made me wonder what would be smart in John's case on the first viewing. A last minute quest of both begins while both have marriages in the offing...

The average too sober dry ass who does not believe in destiny or a bigger picture will undoubtedly find this story complete nonsense. However, it is less black and white than expected. Destiny aside, there is of course more to life than estimating and calculating chance and staying with Halley. People are capricious, choices are not always obvious and people have enough feeling, romance and fantasy to arrive at such choices and feelings, say, to follow your heart. And fortunately, because life would otherwise be boring and you would develop yourself as a person very little.

Serendipity is more than an entertaining film with two endearing actors, Beckinsale and Cusack, especially Eugene Levy as Bloomingdale's salesman is worth mentioning. Furthermore, as far as I'm concerned, the film also offers an excellent underlayer that partly plays on things that are 'predestined' and on the other hand following your heart, in short; being human.
