The East German refugee Ännchen (Ilse Werner) works as a waitress and takes care of ten-year-old Utz (Klaus-Ulrich Krause), whose father disappeared and whose mother was killed during the flight. One day she meets Ulrich (Heinz Engelmann) at the fair and falls in love. He turns out to be the father of her much-loved 'adoptive son'...
