This is my favorite movie ever. Like most people, I'm not into musicals either, but Sweeney isn't a musical either. It is utterly dark, poetic, melancholic and perfect. I've seen this movie more than 20 times, but every time it hits me.
Some seem to find the murder scenes with the slightly too orange blood comical, which I can understand a bit. If you're not 100% in the movie, you quickly think about the fakeness of the blood, which is a shame. If there were green blood spraying from the necks, it wouldn't detract from the movie. Has anyone noticed what the gentleman is singing during this scene? He thinks back to his daughter and at one point he sings: "And though I'll think of you, I guess, untill the day I die. I think I miss you less and less as every day goes by. " This makes it clear how less man he has become, because he doesn't really know what he is feeling. He thinks he keeps thinking about her, but maybe he misses her less, actually he has no idea. My point is, there's more depth to the movie than you see at the first moment, but when you get better If you try to pay attention you will hopefully see how perfect the movie is and shout out thanks: At last!! My arm is complete again!!!!!

Mediocre. The beginning still seems promising and atmospheric, but soon I was almost constantly pulled out of the film by that terrible and irritating singing, often also by actors who actually can't sing at all. I can appreciate this kind of production much better in theatrical form; in film, and especially in this one, it all seems so out of place. The musical main tune is very good and atmospheric. In terms of locations, it is sometimes a bit too dark and gloomy, but there are also beautiful pictures in between. Depp and Bonham Carter are just good, but nothing special (I think both, and especially Johnny Depp, had played in too many Burton films in 2007 and therefore perform a bit on autopilot). More fun were Alan Rickman and the funny part of Baron-Cohen. It's also a brutal, gory film; quite uncharacteristic for Burton, but that kept it fresh and interesting at times. But in general, the film doesn't know which audience it wants to target, and it gets stuck somewhere in the forgotten middle bracket. And those very mediocre songs on top of it are the last straw.

2.5*.
